I think trust is very necessary if trust is broken once then it is really hard to build it again. Relationships are being built in the basis of trust if you don't trust anyone anymore then there is no point of living with them. As you have mentioned that people who don't trust still living together but they are together because of the fear of the society I think if they don't care of think like that then they will start leaving separately.
