An Idiot for Today's Blog
by @jellyvine · 2026-09-16

It was never safe for me to make mistakes. I was a responsible kid—a menace, but a responsible one.
So I became the kind of person who likes routines, plans ahead, remembers details, and handles things before they become problems. I don't like forgetting things, leaving things unfinished, or realizing afterward that I missed something obvious.
Which brings me to today.
I was doing laundry, I was hungry, and I was pressed for time because it was lunchtime. I was in the middle of it when something unexpected came up: I had to be somewhere, so I stopped what I was doing and left.
Except I forgot to turn off the faucet.
Yes. The faucet. It's been a while since I felt like shit about myself.
I'll never get used to the feeling of being a failure because I'm always trying to excel at whatever I do.
That's why I hate interruptions. I hate spontaneity. Not because I dislike surprises in theory, but because the moment something unexpected happens, my carefully arranged sequence of thoughts can disappear completely.
So here I am, at 32, discovering that I am still capable of making extremely basic mistakes.
It was never safe for me to make mistakes, so I learned to be careful. Unfortunately, being careful did not make me immune to being an idiot sometimes.
Today was proof.
I'm hungry, but I don't feel like eating anymore, so it's time for my third cup of coffee. 🥴
